Birla Mandir, Delhi


The Laxminarayan temple is one of the popular temple located in the west of Connaught Place, this temple is dedicated to Laxmi (the goddess of prosperity) and Narayana (Vishnu). The temple was built by industrialist Baldeo Das Birla and his son Jugal Kishore Birla of Birla family, and hence the temple is also known by the name Birla Mandir. Its construction started in 1933 and was inaugurated in 1939 by Mahatma Gandhi. The main deity of the temple is Lord Narayana and Goddess Lakshmi Other than this There are other small shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha and Hanuman. There is also a holy place dedicated to Lord Buddha. The left side of the temple houses Devi Durga, popularly known as the goddess of Shakti, the power. The head height of the temple is almost 160ft.


This has an enormous Story as this temple was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi on the condition that people of all castes will be allowed to enter the temple. It is said that the 101 skilled pundits created the spacious corridors inside the temple from Benares, headed by Acharya Vishvanath Shastri.
